I will not be pulled into conflict |

(By Tsem Rinpoche)
Some people think if they trust Trijang Rinpoche they are against H.H. Dalai Lama. Some people think if they have faith in H.H. Dalai Lama which they should, they cannot accept Trijang Rinpoche. That is wrong view. Certainly H.H. Dalai Lama is a high incarnation, highly attained and one of the greatest scholars of Buddhism in this world. He really practiced the sacred teachings and became attained…lifetimes ago and incarnate to benefit others. But His Holiness the Dalai Lama was not the only one. Many great beings male and female, high and ‘low’ practiced and became highly attained. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche was one of these. One highly attained being cannot be better than another one. It’s just how they manifest. Highly attained beings all should be respected and they can manifest as Kings, Queens, ministers, generals, homeless, monks, nuns, scholars, bridges, animals, animate and inanimate beings. Never limit the abilities of enlightened Ones. Therefore we can respect and have faith in both Trijang Rinpoche and H.H. the Dalai Lama. I do. I do not see conflict.
Sometimes enlightened beings can manifest ‘conflict’ for a higher purpose, the great senior monks of Gaden used to relay to me. I respect all lamas. These are my views. You may have your own and I respect it, but respect my views too. I’ve always for the last 30 years had natural spontaneous faith in H.H. the Dalai Lama. When I first saw a picture of Trijang Rinpoche in Howell, New Jersey, I spontaneously cried from deep natural faith. It still happens now. Whenever I read about His Holiness, I also gained greater faith. It’s from inside of me. Some people say my faith in these beings are ‘questionable’. But you know what, that is their own opinion. They don’t know me. Nor have ever met me.
I do not need to agree to everything these higher beings may share, but that is my level. But I respect all great beings and not say negatives. Just do our practice. Gain compassion. Gain wisdom. Gain tolerance. Bring peace to everyone and everywhere we go and don’t create conflict. This is important. We may speak up or ‘fight’ for our views and rights, but do it in a way that gives honor to our practice and what it stands for.
Tsem Rinpoche
P.S. For me I make no distinctions between any lamas and their views. Each lama has their way to guide their students to enlightenment. Hence 84,000 teachings by the Sage Shakyamuni the Conqueror. So we should never get into conflicts and criticize this or that lama. In Buddhism we are suppose to be kind to even ghosts, beggars, thieves, snakes and all sentient beings. All deserve compassion. So the least we can do is refrain from negativities. Our job in dharma is not to find who is right or wrong in others, but to find who is suitable for us and respect all other teachers, traditions and their methods. I will never go against any lama or be pulled into criticizing anyone. I have my practice from Kyabje Zong Rinpoche which some may like and some may not, but it suits me and I will continue. I will never give up any practice my guru gave me 31 years ago. No other guru or student will convince me otherwise. I have examined Zong Rinpoche and his teachings in terms of suitability for me and how they helped in my life to become a better person and that is good enough for me. I remain firm and loyal to my teacher/lineage and practice while respecting everyone else’s. I respect all and will continue to. My job in this life is to create peace, compassion and tolerance in my mind and hopefully affect the environment around me to be happy. I have a long way to go, but I will get there. Thank you very much.
I personally really feel warm to see this picture. It is His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche bestowing a set of initiations to His Holiness the young 14th Dalai Lama. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche had conferred teachings, oral transmissions, commentaries and vast corpus of Dharma to His Holiness the Dalai Lama for over thirty years. This teacher and disciple relationship is sacred and should be respected in Tibetan form of Buddhism. Especially in Tantra where attainments are fully dependent on our respect and trust in our teachers and to never blame, begrudge or abandon him or his teachings. We should never listen to the negative talks of others about our teachers and what he kindly bestowed upon us. If by karma we find it hard to be with a teacher, respectfully ask to be excused but never criticize or justify it publicly or privately. It will not help your mind, the minds of others and our spiritual development.
Sometimes we can have two teachers that manifest opposing views. We can choose the view we find suitable to us and not criticize the other ‘opposing’ view. Dharma is individual. This is especially important for students who have received teachings, practices and initiations from various teachers who have manifested ‘opposing’ views like I have. Which teacher to choose? Our job is not find right or wrong, but to practice the best we can to be a beneficial person in society. Our practice and behavior will show the wisdom of our teacher through us. We choose the teachings that suit us and still respect the teachers who shows ‘opposing’ views. I have teachers who have opposing views of different spiritual practices, so my views have to suit those in the same situation. I am not allowed to choose or have that option so please understand. I have to respect all my teachers. All fifteen of them. You may not be in this situation, but I am. In Gaden, we had to go to various teachers for teachings. That is my humble opinion.
I often get criticized for picking one teacher’s views instead of another. Or coerced to choose. I have teachers who have manifested conflicting views and I have to find a way to come to terms with it peacefully and respectfully. But I know my Dharma enough and I choose the teacher that has impacted a great change in my life. I do not follow teachers because they are famous, well known, wealthy, have many followers or influential. This does not affect my decision alone. Many great lamas had teachers who were simple hermits in caves and in reliance on their teachers, they gained liberation. Read the stories of the 84 Mahasiddhas. I follow the teacher who touches my heart and inspired me to change from a selfish, angry, intolerant and difficult person to be better. After all our actions create our karmas and their effects we dread. So if our actions change due to our mind, this is the kindness of the teacher and how he/she impacted our minds. Ultimately whatever the views of the teacher, he/she has changed my mind to look within and to change from within. To this teacher I owe everything especially my transformations. I don’t care what this teacher prayed to, practiced or not practiced, liked or disliked or still doing. I don’t care if my teacher prays to a tree believing it is Manjushri. I will not criticize any teacher and I will never abandon my teacher who showed me that being tolerant, compassionate and working for others is the true meaning of my life. True spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action. I am far from it, but I am inspired enough to keep practicing until I achieve these qualities. I thank and bow to my teachers eternally. All of them. I do not see or get involved with conflict. I respect all teachers who train their students with utmost compassion and in the best circumstances they can. I will not point fingers and say this teacher or that teacher is good, bad, wrong, right or whatever. I am not the judge, jury and executioner of any teacher or tradition or practice, but a humble, simple and afflicted denizen of samsara doing my best. We only can decide for ourselves which teacher is right for us and no one else can decide for us.
Good luck everyone!

We don’t know how great is the High Lama’s mind is the same as a child would not understand how the adult’s mind work, the kids will never stop demand their parents for what they like and they will throw tantrum, cry, make noise, being rebellious, etc until they give up or they get what they want, we have our ways to help or raise a children to be a better person, but they won’t understand. Well, any difference when comparing with the Adults? When we meet a high lama, we will request for this and request for that, all the things we requested is based on what we want, it is to fulfill our desire, and when we realized the lama is not helping us as per what we expected, we then complain, bad mouth them, and so on, we too, won’t understand how a lama will guide us or help us.
We all have our own thoughts and our own expectation, when we do not accept something, or do not believe in a religion, we cannot force other people to be like us, because everyone have their own thoughts, we don’t but they do, so we should learn to respect others of what they choose, and they’ll respect ours. Imagine if someone else come and tell you that your religion is no good, and they keep pestering you about your religion, how would you feel? So if you don’t like it, then don’t do it to other people.
A religion is suppose to make us a better person, it is suppose to bring more happiness to ourselves, but if someone who is complaining everyday, cursing other people, scolding, belittle them, bad mouthing, etc, then we should start thinking, is this religion really suit me, am I really learning what this religion is teaching me?
When we are in a spiritual path, we should focus on our Dharma practice, we should focus on our Buddha and not to involve or to create politics. Even we may ‘look good’ defaming someone else in the beginning, but it will make us look ugly, very ugly, extremely ugly at the end when the truth shows up. So what’s the point of doing these? How does these benefit us? Never forget about Karma, everything we did, there is karma in within, and Karma ain’t no fun.
I respect Dalai Lama, Tsem Rinpoche, Zong Rinpoche, Trijang Rinpoche, and all the high lamas, I don’t follow them not because they are no good, but it’s because I’m not caliber enough to have and to learn Dharma from so many gurus. I like what my guru, H.E. Tsem Rinpoche teach me and I will never give up on Dorje Shugden no matter what others say, because I believe in my guru and I believe my protector which is given by my guru to help me in my spiritual path.
Thank you for all believing in me even over geshe Michael…
So i will say now 4 Starbucks steps works with dorje shugden but still the disrespect continues.
In this case let me say that the truth is Vajrayogini is not as good as dorje shugden.
It is just another way to promote the wrong things…
I actually gave the Vajrayogini teachings and am happy that promoting dorje shugden has helped the teachings of Vajrayogini but in fact dorje shugden is even better and I would rather practice dorje shugden from now not even Vajrayogini.
Thank you tsem tulkuu.
Love you all,
Lama Konchok Shenphen
Guess what everyone? I went ahead and did my Vajrayogini practice anyway and its okay to do that one too!
Same with dorje shugden.
Why can’t we do both?
Much love
Lks
Dear Rinpoche – I am truly humbled and felt that this statement from you sums up all decisions that I have taken to take you as my Teacher and remain with Kechara as a Dharma center = “We only can decide for ourselves which teacher is right for us and no one else can decide for us'”
This article is very relevant in today’s environment where we find many people who have started criticizing other centers or teachers for what they are teaching.
Humbly yours
Lum Kok Luen
??❤️??????
Thank you for this article. This article actually reminds me of what always happened in my surroundings. Normally, when there is some kind of misunderstandings between my friends which was not relating to me, the use to remind me if you talk to her then don’t talk to me. And at the same time, my another friend also remind me the same.
This is actually not a good behavior as everyone has their rights to talk with everyone they want. I often get criticized for picking up other person views instead of another.

Dear friends,
Tibet has produced many powerful meditations, rituals and guidelines to help us gain spiritual protection, gain wisdom and higher states of consciousness. In general Tibet has produced many powerful methods for the growth of our spiritual evolution. Dorje Shugden is an angel, a saint, a powerful spiritual protector-warrior who originated 350 years ago when a highly awakened Tibetan Lama fulfilled his vows to become a special being to grant protection, wisdom, material needs, safety when travelling (normal and astral travel) and spiritual awakening. Both the Great 5th Dalai Lama and the current His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama composed short yet effective prayers to invoke upon the power and blessings of this special saint and protector. One can recite either one of the prayers that you feel suits you, anytime or even daily. When you feel a special need for help, you can recite either prayer anytime. When you are feeling down, afraid or just need a blessing, you can recite them. After reciting either invocation, it is good to chant the mantra of Dorje Shugden: Om Benza Wiki Bitana Soha.
You do not have to be a Buddhist or practitioner of any religion to invoke upon the blessings and protection of this special enlightened and awakened angel Dorje Shugden. He helps all without discrimination or bias as he is filled with compassion and love. Divinity has no boundaries, they help all who call upon them.
Enclosed are the prayers in English, Chinese and Tibetan.
May you be safe, protected and blessed.

Divination (‘mo’) Text by Dorje Shugden
This is an important divination (‘mo’) text composed by Dorje Shugden himself. Dorje Shugden took trance of the Choyang Dulzin oracle lama, the senior oracle of Gaden Shartse Monastery, and instantly on the spot composed this text within two hours.
The divination text contains information on how to use dice to do divination for the future and is known to be highly accurate. When practitioners use this text, they will be in direct contact with Dorje Shugden to get answers to questions about the future. It is for those who have good samaya with Dorje Shugden and are free of the eight worldly dharmas to be of benefit to others in divining the future.

His Holiness the 10th Panchen Lama
Tibetans commonly refer to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama as the “sun and moon” of Tibetan Buddhism. They are the center of Tibetan Buddhist civilization, which draws to its sphere of influence millions of non-Tibetan practitioners. The Panchen Lama’s incarnation line began with the 16th abbot of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen (1570 – 1662). He was bestowed the title of Panchen Lama by His Holiness the 5th Dalai Lama after being declared as an emanation of Amitabha.
After being given the title, his three previous incarnations were posthumously also bestowed the title, making Lobsang Chokyi Gyeltsen the 4th Panchen Lama. He became a teacher to many Tibetans, Bhutanese and Mongolian religious figures, including His Holiness the 4th and 5th Dalai Lamas, and the 1st Jetsun Dampa of Mongolia. A prolific author, Chokyi Gyeltsen is credited with over a hundred compositions, including a number of commentaries and ritual texts that remain central in the Gelukpa tradition today. Along with his role as a teacher of the Dharma, the Panchen Lamas are usually responsible for the recognition of the rebirths of the Dalai Lamas, and vice versa.
The 10th Panchen Lama, Lobsang Trinley Lhundrub Chokyi Gyeltsen (19 February 1938 – 28 January 1989) continued both the spiritual and political roles of his predecessors. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, his contemporary, was even heard to say and echo the Panchen Lama’s own words that the Dalai Lama would safeguard Tibet from the outside while the Panchen Lama would safeguard Tibet from the inside, as he never left Tibet after the political troubles of 1959. He was truly loved by the Tibetans, all the way until his passing. When he taught, thousands of people would attend, not only from his own Gelug lineage, but masters and practitioners from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
At his sprawling monastery of Tashi Lhunpo, he has a special chapel specifically dedicated to Dorje Shugden, where prayers and rituals are performed on a daily basis. In his great omniscience the Panchen Lama held Dorje Shugden as the principal Dharma protector of the monastery. He also personally propitiated Dorje Shugden among other Dharma protectors, and even wrote extensive prayers and rituals to Dorje Shugden. These rituals and prayers are contained within his ‘sung bum’ or collected works, which are provided here. As such a great lama, with an erudite and clear understanding of the Buddhist scriptures, a teacher to millions in both Tibet and China, from an established incarnation line and an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha, he could not be mistaken about his practice of Dorje Shugden.
His Holiness 10th Panchen Lama is known for his composition of commentaries and practice texts that are still in use by contemporary Buddhist practitioners both in Tibet and across the world. One of these is a powerful ritual composition propitiating the compassionate Dorje Shugden.
Upon the request by Acharya Lobsang Jangchub to compose a shorter version of the prayer (sadhana) for the exhortation of activities of Dorje Shugden, Panchen Lama immediately composed an abbreviate form of Dorje Shugden’s Kangsol. This text is entitled “Manjunatha’s (Tsongkapa) Lineage protector Dorje Shugden and five forms wrathful propitiations and confessional prayers and fulfilment of activities rites” or “Melodious sound of Accomplishment of the Four Activities” for short. Once the prayers were completed, he had signs and strong feelings that Dorje Shugden has been working hard to protect the Buddhadharma in general and the lineage of Lama Tsongkhapa specifically.
Mirroring the abilities of one of his earlier incarnations, Khedrub Je, a disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa and master of both sutra and tantra, the Panchen Lama used his compositional skill and poetic prowess to create a masterful sadhana. Worthy of note is a praise in which the first letter of each verse is a Tibetan vowel. Such compositions are rarely seen, and have historically only been used when propitiating senior Dharma protectors such as Palden Lhamo and Kalarupa.
The Panchen Lama also stated that while composing the Dorje Shugden sadhana (prayers) he was filled with a sense of happiness and bliss. He ends the composition with not only his official title but his ordination name, Tenzin Trinley Jigme Choje Wangchuk, endorsing the validity of his work. He composed the sadhana in his own Tashi Lhunpo monastery while in the Hall of Clear Light and Bliss.

Dorje Shugden is a powerful protector deity who is also an emanation of Manjushri, a wisdom bestowing Buddha. Therefore, he has great ability to help us to progress further on the spiritual path. He does this by helping us to overcome obstacles and problems for the modern individual.
Due to his enlightened nature, Dorje Shugden is able to manifest 32 deities and within the same abode resides Setrap and Kache Marpo:-
1. 5 Dorje Shugden families or emanations. They consists of the following:-
– Dulzin Dorje Shugden, which performs activities to eliminate inner and outer obstacles.
– Shize, which performs activities to pacify all illnesses and disease.
– Gyenze, which performs activities to increase all desirable material and spiritual wealth.
– Wangze, which performs activities to control difficult people and circumstances.
– Trakze, which performs activities to wrathfully eliminate all insurmountable obstacles and life-threatening situations.
2. 9 Mothers. They represent protection of the five senses and developing control of the four elements. These are all attributes that signify their ability to assist tantric practitioners with their higher meditations.
3. 8 Guiding Monks. They represent the Eight Great Bodhisattvas (Avalokitesvara, Manjushri, Vajrapani, Samantabhadra, Maitreya, Kshitigarbha, Akashagarbha, Sarva-nivarana-viskambini) and they bring about the growth of the Dharma, through the Sangha, Dharma practitioners and Dharma establishments.
4. 10 Youthful & Wrathful Attendants. They represent the ten wrathful attendants to avert inner and outer obstacles. They are beings who are from Mongolia, China, Kashmir, India, Bengali, etc.
5. Setrap. He is a senior Dharma Protector from India and an emanation of Amitabha Buddha. He had enthroned Dorje Shugden as an authentic Dharma Protector. Therefore, he also resides within the same mandala of Dorje Shugden.
6. Kache Marpo. He is not an emanation of Dorje Shugden but he is still an enlightened Dharma Protector in his own right. He was originally known as Tsiu Marpo of Samye Monastery. However, he has placed himself under the service of Dorje Shugden as his chief minister, performing many activities in order to protect and benefit practitioners. Therefore, he stands guard at the main entrance of Dorje Shugden’s mandala. He often takes trance of qualified mediums to speak.
7. Namkar Barzin. He is the reincarnation of an old Mongolian monk and when he passed away in Phari area of Tibet, his spirit was placed as a powerful assistant of Dorje Shugden. He guards and protects buildings and great institutions especially those that benefit others. He rides on a mythical Gyaling animal that resembles a goat but with scales.
These sacred images are available on *Vajrasecrets. They are made of high quality alloy and are one of a kind. They are based on the lineage of His Holiness Panchen Rinpoche’s monastery, Tashilhunpo in Shigatse, Tibet. In fact, the iconography of these statues are based on detailed photographs taken by H. E. Tsem Rinpoche during a trip to Tashilhunpo’s protector chapel. These are based exactly as the 10th Panchen Lama’s personal collection.

Amazing post!!!!!
Dear friends, For months we have been working on this BEAUTIFUL and meaningful mural in Kathmandu, Nepal. Please click here to enjoy the many stunning pictures of this mural: https://bit.ly/2LgOj8J

Antique Pelden Lhamo thangka with sacred Dorje Shugden at the bottom right. Can see Tsongkapa and Guru Rinpoche on the top also. Beautiful and holy.
There are many great Buddhist masters highly attained from different school. Yet each of them have their right and their practitioners have their choice to choose what they want to study under. One highly attained being cannot be better than another one. It’s just how they manifest There are many religion too having different method of teaching as well. All of us have our own right to choose what we want. As long as we respect all other teachers, traditions and their methods and there will be peace. Once we interfere or comment anything about others or teachers ,conflicts will arise, misunderstandings , and so forth. Anyway we do not have the right to judge and comment on that.
To me once we made up our mind to come under that teacher, that is the choice. I am glad to have Rinpoche to thank who showed me that being tolerant, compassionate and working for others is the true meaning of my life.. Nor matter what happen , i will follow my Guru all the way and I will never ever be pulled into any conflict .
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this post.
In this world we have many religions , even within Buddhism there are many lineages and school of thoughts. Hence, we must learn to respect each other. Who are we to comment if the religious practise is good or bad. Each practice may suit different people at different level. Therefore, we should not give any negative comment on other people’s choice. Many times, conflict happened because everyone like to impose their own views and perception on others. This is not necessary. I think ultimately, it is how we practise. We should reflect if we are practicing compassion, love, tolerance and doing work that benefit others.
I am fortunate to know and found my guru Tsem Rinpoche and I will follow his teaching.
Great message every Tibetan especially must read!
Tsem Rinpoche has worked very hard and patiently over the years to provide good and accurate knowledge about Dorje Shugden. These truths are not new at all but have been overshadowed by malicious anti-Shugden propaganda over the last 2 decades. It is a welcome change to see this comment by Suzy on Rinpoche’s YouTube channel in which she expressed her realization of the Protector’s goodness. This is truly beautiful-(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl-4lIwxph4&t=11s)
We live in this duality world and everything is in dualism. When we have teachings from different teachers, especially in opposing views, we naturally will fall into making comparison, to judge which one is better. Just like what Tsem Rinpoche mentioned that we are not in the position to judge whose teaching is better, we just need to choose those that are suitable for us to practice. We should treat all teachings with gratitude as it’s our good karma that we’re able to know Dharma in this life. Everything in this world is neutral by nature. It’s our personal perception or belief that judge things into good or bad, weak or strong, etc. Many conflicts arise also due to this personal judgment. If we could treat everything as neutral and as one, no one better or worse than the other, we can easily accept all teachings with receptive mind. We will eventually realize that all teachings are for the benefits of all and conflicts will naturally dissolve.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. I will always follow and trust my Guru’s advice. I always believe my Guru’s advice is the best advice and I have the best Guru in the whole world.Everyone has their own rights to choose which religion and the Guru that they want to follow. I will never ever be pulled into conflict with my own Guru no matter what. I have a strong affinity with my Guru will be this way until the last day of my life.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing his opinion and thoughts.A Guru devotion is very important. It shows respect, compassion, humbleness and loyalty towards one practitioners/students towards his Guru. The devotion cannot be break or diminish.
With folded hands, I trust my Guru and I will follow his teachings til the end. This is my choice,my decision and my freedom.
Dear Andrea,
Rinpoche has been attacked solely due to his choice for following his Guru’s advice. His devotion to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche is not appreciated but further escalated into hatred and anger of anti-Shugden people. Every day, Rinpoche receives endless attack online from people who do not know Rinpoche yet they commented vulgarly on his Facebook, Twitter and blog post. The amount is overwhelming which you can see here https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/dorje-shugden/will-the-dalai-lama-agree-with-this.html.
Although Rinpoche is not political and has never been interested in one, he is being attacked because of CTA’s political agenda in suppressing the Dorje Shugden practitioners and in taking their religious freedom away from them. Being a Tibetan, Rinpoche is greatly affected by the ban imposed by the CTA. He has lost all his friends, denied access to monasteries and from seeing his Gurus due to this ban. Rinpoche did a lot for the monasteries (fundraising, building, medical, food, etc.), the Tibetan community in India (education, facilities, medical, etc.) and supported many for more than 25 years, yet when the ban is imposed since 20 years ago, they turned their back on Rinpoche who has done nothing wrong but chose to follow his Guru’s instructions.
Here is a post that will help you in understanding the issue of the Dorje Shugden practice that is well explained by Rinpoche https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/who-is-dorje-shugden-to-me.html and I wish very much for the support you give in Rinpoche’s struggle to lift the Dorje Shugden ban.
Should you require further assistance, please let me know. Thank you!
With best wishes,
Pastor Adeline
Thank you Pastor Adeline for your advice.
At Buddha’s time, he once killed a man to save 500 lives because Buddha knew the man’s evil plan to steal the fortune from the 500 mens on the ship that they were travelling on. In Buddhism, the act of killing is morally unacceptable & it is wrong, but with deeper understanding & analysis; we can see that the motivation was out of compassion; to save a life from going to the great hell & save 500 lives to carry on their deeds & benefiting others.
Similarly in the case of His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche & His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, both are highly attained beings who shared a very sacred teacher & disciple relationship, the very foundation of one’s spiritual path. To say that one is wrong & the other is right is not logical because we cannot view the “conflict” with our ordinary mind simply because we cannot possibly see the higher purpose of it now.
Buddha has once said that we must observe & analyse anything we hear or see & not simply believe it the first time we encounter them. Only after finding that it agrees with reason & it is beneficial to one & all, we then accept & live up to it.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing this article. I will follow my Guru till the end just like how my Guru is following his Guru. Nobody can say anything about my choice and they cannot decide for me. Everyone has their own rights to choose which religion and the Guru that they want to follow. We also taught not to talk bad about other religion, beliefs and Gurus.
With folded palm,
Vivian
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing that among the highly attained beings, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, they act on a higher purpose. Ordinary eyes may view them as in opposition to each other, but there is in fact no conflict, as their ultimate goal is the same.
Rinpoche had many Gurus, so in sense it may seem more “challenging” since different Gurus may have different methods. As for me, it is a lot easier, since I follow only one Guru. It’s clear cut, there’s no conflict with anybody else, lol.
Thank you for this teaching Rinpoche. Certainly we should view all Masters in Buddhism have their very own unique way to disseminating Dharma and by the way Buddha Shakyamuni gave 84,000 types of teachings for all sorts of people who have all sorts of level of mind. It is something very true that we should just check and balance Guru (s) that we wish to learn from before “jumping” into it as it is illogical to just do something that you wouldn’t know nor understand. Once we found our kind of Guru and practices we should just concentrate on our own rather than doubting other’s practice and start comparing. Worse still to condemn others practice. I do agree completely that there are controversies which are meant for a higher purpose. Time will definitely tell.
The teacher is the root of all our attainments and good qualities we aspire to achieve in our pratice. The teacher is the person who takes care of us in the best way through his skillful means; not only for this life but for our future lives. If in this life we find it hard to follow the teacher’s instructions; we should persevere; we should surrender ourselves to the Guru who has our best interest in mind. The reason we find in hard is that our ego/self is being challenged and it is a good sign that we have difficulties as this shows our ego is being challenged. If we have not difficulties then perhaps our ego has found a way to cheat us.
We must remain loyal to the Guru who has benefitted the most and not be pulled into conflict with others’ opinion be it lay or other High Lamas and only our Guru that matters most to us need to be followed while we respect others opinion.
Students may receive teachings from different gurus. Sometimes, the teachings may appear conflicting but the mature, discerning students usually do not become confused. In the Tibetan tradition, one has a root teacher and follows the instructions of this teacher for life. It is the teacher who has impacted us the most in our practice. According to Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, “The root guru is the lama who points out to us the true nature of the mind. The one who points out to us the essential naked awareness behind the conceptual coming and going of the thoughts and who reveals to us our innate Buddha nature.” H.E. Tsem Rinpoche respects all his teachers but His Eminence is loyal to Kyabje Zong Rinpoche who was his root guru. The guru-disciple relationship is sacred and should be respected by all.
We can receive any teachings from many Guru or high lama but we should have to choose one root Guru who most impact to us.Enlightened beings can manifested to any things with no limit. H.H Dalai Lama is manifest of chenrenzig but who knows how many high lama cherenzig been manifested. We can’t follow one high lama base on his fame.
Guru always remind us not to defame others to make ourself outstanding. As a Buddhist, compassion and tolerance must be practiced for attainment.
Finally, Guru Devotion which is very important in order for Trantric practitioners to achieve attainment.
Thanks Rinpoche kindly reminder.
Jason
Dear Rinpoche,
After reading this article a number of times, your teaching on the middle way, be compassionate, be kind, be considerate, be respectful, love one another, and transform our minds so that we work for others become so much more meaningful to my ignorant mind.
My family and I are certainly very fortunate to have found you as our Guru for all of us to come onto the Dharma path and to remain sincerely on this path no matter what happens.
Thank so, so much Rinpoche for this yet another wonderful teaching which really touches our lives so much in so many ways.
Humbly yours
Lum Kok Luen
Thank You Rinpoche for the teaching. It is logic that the highly attained lama are same in term of level and capability but they serve different function or roles to spread Dharma. For instance, we can not say Manjushri is better than Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara.
Guru Devotion is core of Tibetan Buddhism and it is the .most important element in Dharma path. Hence, we should choose the right Guru; the Lama who suits us most, whose teaching can penetrate our mind and transform us to better one. Once we have decided or chosen our Guru, we should have faith to Him all the way regardless others say or comment negatively to Him. Follow His teaching all the way. Of course, we choose to have faith to our Guru which does not mean to be enemy of other highly attained Lama. We just want to practice the teaching given by our Guru in peace and to benefit others too.
Let us work together to spread precious Dharma to others but not conflict to degenerate Buddhism.
Thank you Soon Huat for your comment. Yes what you say is very true. Why must it be just cause we disagree with another means we are enemies? That does not make sense and is certainly not Buddhist practice. Sounds more samsara and we follow Buddhist teachings because we want to get out of samsara not get in to it even more by having more conflict, having to choose which teacher to follow.
Actually by right we should follow our root Guru and keep samaya with that Guru as stated in the 50 verses of Guru Devotion https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/tsem-tulku-rinpoche/buddhas-dharma/complete-commentary-on-50-verses-of-guru-devotion.html on how important it is to have clean samaya with our Guru who gave us teachings. Not everyone has samaya with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, so why are we asked to break our samaya we our main root Guru and “maintained” samaya with His Holiness whom for many of us, have not even met him. So, what samaya is there to maintain? No matter how we look at it, it is twisted and makes no sense in every angle. Again thanks for your comment and keep it up!
Thank You Joy for the encouragement. Yes, One Guru One center…I heard there is a Mahayana Great Guru’s story; His Guru asked him to follow His instruction to read one Sutra but nothing else, eventually, He has become a great Guru and He said the method is very effective but, unfortunaely, not many people can follow
With this article HE the 25th Tsem Rinpoche expounded clearly the depth of the teachings of Dharma, from His personal experience with 15 Gurus, and concluded that all Dharma teachings by great Masters the likes of HH the 14th Dalai Lama and HH Trijang Rinpoche are but the same. It is to create a better person of their students who will practise love and compassion unconditionally.
The conflicts of any blessed teachings is only within the level of the minds of the unattained samsaric humans the likes of us. Therefore if we are unable to grasp nor understand any teachings of any Lama, do not fault these attained beings but rather contemplate by ourselves as to why it is so.
Eventually if we still don’t comprehend, just do not create conflicts nor hate but just practise whatever that suits us. With time our minds may open to be of the right views to whatever that we may not understand.
Conflicts and hate mongering is not within the essence of Buddhism.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your thoughts. Rinpoche shows us good example of the quality of being a student. We should not criticize any Guru, because everything that our Guru teaches us is for dharma and for our good. In my case, maybe I don’t feel it because I only have Rinpoche as my only Guru. But I relate this teaching to our Pastors in Kechara. We should not criticize any of the Pastor also, as Pastors are the one that connect us to Rinpoche, and teaching and sharing that comes out from the Pastors mouth is from Rinpoche, and for our own good also. Criticizing, will not lead us further but lead us to bad karma. Thank you again Rinpoche, I will always keep this in mind. _/\_
There are many religions in the world and even within Buddhism there are different vehicles i.e. Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana to cater to the many mental make-up of humans. Furthermore, the BUddha has 84,000 teaches so how can we say that one teaching is right and the other is wrong.
How can one say the other is wrong. As Rinpoche as teaches and encourages, everyone should follow their religion and be good practitioners of their faith.
It’s the practice of forgiveness, acceptance, kindness and compassion to all living beings that matters. We cannot say we are on the right practice when we cannot even have love, compassion and forgiveness.
Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa, Tibet
Over 400 years ago a great and learned lama Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was famed in Mongolia, Tibet, Nepal and China for being very saintly and compassionate. He resided in his residence (Zimkhang Gongma Ladrang) in Drepung Monastery. His root guru was H.H. the Omniscient 4th Panchen Lama and his close dharma brother was the 5th Dalai Lama.
The 5th Dalai Lama and Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen had a very close and dharmic relationship and often went to receive teachings together from the 4th Panchen Lama. They were close in age. They both became very learned and well known. During this time, the Dalai Lama was enthroned as a Dharma King of Tibet. But more people went to see Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen for teachings, initiations and divinations. This made the attendants of the 5th Dalai Lama feel threatened that Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s fame might usurp the power of the 5th Dalai Lama. So they had a khata forced down his throat. At that moment, Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen dissolved his psychic winds and generated the wish to be a great guardian of Buddha and Tsongkapa’s teachings. As his consciousness dissolved, he entered ‘bardo’ as a dharma protector of the highest order (jikten depey sungma). Many signs were seen throughout Lhasa at this time and the earth was said to have shaken in Lhasa. This event was already predicted to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s previous incarnation when he was one of the 8 main disciples of Lord Tsongkapa the Supreme Master and he served Tsongkapa directly by building Gaden Monastery.
When the 5th Dalai Lama heard what his scheming and power-hungry attendants had done, he was very distressed. He was very sorry Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen was murdered and dishonored as he was a great dharma master. The 5th Dalai Lama composed an apology to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen. In Lhasa, tens of thousands gathered for the cremation of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s holy body. During the cremation, the 5th Dalai Lama’s apology was read out at which flames spontaneously arose from the body of Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen commencing the cremation. From the body, during cremation, a powerful whirlwind of smoke tunneled into the sky for all to see as this was an indication Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen’s consciousness has arisen as the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden. The Dharma Protector Setrap immediately recognized this new protector Dorje Shugden and ‘enthroned’ him as a powerful Dharma Protector in the realm of the Buddhas. From this, Setrap and Dorje Shugden are closely connected and very close working hand in hand always. After the cremation, the great 5th Dalai Lama built a Dorje Shugden chapel on the spot the cremation took place and named it Trode Khangsar. The 5th Dalai Lama commissioned the statue of Dorje Shugden in this chapel and had monks installed in the chapel to do continuous propitiations to Dorje Shugden. Trode Khangsar Chapel was a commemoration to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who was wronged and also a celebration of his consciousness arising as the World Peace Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.
This Trode Khangsar Chapel still exists now in Lhasa where many make pilgrimages there. It is in good condition and was recently renovated. It is over 400 years old and a testimony to the respect the Great 5th Dalai Lama had to Tulku Drakpa Gyeltsen who arose as Dorje Shugden.
I have visited this holy chapel in Lhasa years back. I’ve never heard of it till I was in Lhasa and by chance, I was told about it which I was happy to visit. I could not find the place but strangely a bunch of pilgrims from Amdo told me they would show me how to get there in Lhasa.
This short video is a short clip of this holy Trode Khangsar Chapel in Lhasa today commemorating Dorje Shugden, built by the great 5th Dalai Lama. The great 5th Dalai Lama even composed a prayer to Dorje Shugden which is still available today and we can recite to invoke the blessings, protection, and assistance of World Peace Protector Dorje Shugden.

The 5th Dalai Lama’s Prayer to Dorje Shugden
HUM
Though unmoving from the sphere of primordial spontaneity,
With wrathful turbulent power, swifter than lightning,
Endowed with heroic courage to judge good and bad,
I invite you with faith, please come to this place!
Robes of a monk, crown adorned with rhinoceros leather hat,
Right hand holds ornate club, left holds a human heart,
Riding various mounts such as nagas and garudas,
Who subdues the mamos of the charnel grounds, praise to you!
Samaya substances, offerings and torma, outer, inner and secret,
Favourite visual offerings and various objects are arranged.
Although, previously, my wishes were a bit dense,
Do not stop your powerful apparitions, I reveal and confess!
Now respectfully praising with body, speech, and mind,
For us, the masters, disciples, benefactors and entourages,
Provide the good and avert the bad!
Bring increase like the waxing moon in spiritual and temporal realms!
Moreover, swiftly accomplishing all wishes,
According to our prayers, bestow the supreme effortlessly!
And like the jewel that bestows all wishes,
Always protect us with the Three Jewels!

I hope Tibetan leadership will stop contradicting itself and discriminating based on faith, for the benefit of Tibetan people.
It is incredibly reassuring to the students of a guru that he or she will not be pressured into choosing sides in a conflict of this nature. Not only that but to hold one’s own views based off the logic and application of the Dharma and the teachings of one’s lineage. This shows a strength of mind that will carry the burden of many of gossipers and non-believers whilst pursuing a kinder and more compassionate world rather than tuning out of the world into one’s own ignorance.
Tsem Rinpoche is able to do this because he is fearless in his views and spreading of the Dharma. There may be so methods that not everybody can understand in the long term or short term but the main goal is the same, to spread the Dharma and relieve the suffering of sentient beings. This can be seen in his actions as it simply radiates in events that occur when Rinpoche is present or involved. If a leader is unfaltering then this provides a strong foundation for the students to also emulate these qualities and be fearless and strong hearted but with their own logical application of Dharma not simply following like blind sheep.
You are so very wise. Bless you Tsem Rinpoche!
The previous Trijang Rinpoche, Gaden Oral Tradition Holder and Dalai Lama, Avalokiteshvara cannot be wrong. So it is better to just do dharma and develop ourselves and not get into any conflict. What some of these great beings manifest may not be obviously apparent to us, but from their track record we know they are only mean to benefit others so that should be good enough for all of us.
INTERESTING DEVELOPEMENT:
We have been informed by our friends in Dharamsala that the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA; the de facto head of Tibetans in Exile in India) that they have seen the vulgarities said in the name of being on the Dalai Lama’s defense. Many who can read English in Dharamsala have been horrified that their campaign against Shugden is leading to such vulgarities and attacks on Shugden followers personal lives. CTA had hoped to intimidate Shugden people to give up through fear and violence in the past, but it has worked against them as they represent Dalai Lama a Nobel peace prize winner. People are asking why Dalai Lama does not speak up against the hatred towards Shugden people? CTA in the past have kept quiet about the attacks on Shugden people both physical and verbal but now IT’S DIRECTLY BEING CONNECTED TO THEM which is bad PR. The more Dalai Lama supporters hurl abuses on line and it’s recorded, the more it will work against CTA.
The CTA visit this blog often to keep a watch. They are embarrassed by people who write such negatives and vulgarities now and engage in name-calling in the name of Buddhism and the Dalai Lama. It reflects terribly on them. They have been getting more negative response from people around the world and more queries. The press has been picking up on these types of verbal abuses hurled at Shugden people and find it justified and alerted to the fact something is seriously wrong. They are starting to question the CTA more which is embarrassing.
We will keep posting these vulgarities hurled at Shugden people online. This is what Shugden people have to tolerate daily. But you will see NO SUCH COMMENTS from Shugden people. I have friends who informed me they will also send this article’s link to press around the world and proper authorities to keep them alert. As violent vulgarities can escalate into violence against innocent Shugden practitioners.
You see the bottom line is all this name hurling and violent words can stop overnight if His Holiness Dalai Lama speaks up to stop it. Dalai Lama should send people to engage in dialogue to settle this matter once and for all. It would benefit everyone all around. This ban and advice against peaceful Shugden practitioners was started by Tibetan leadership. They should do something to stop it as they are responsible for every person they affect with this ban. The Tibetan leadership is responsible for every harm perpetrated or planned against Shugden practitioners both verbal, psychological and physical.
Do see the pictures here of the abuse but be ready for how unpleasant it could be: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/?p=58841
It’s amazing, sometimes when you make a spiritual choice, some people can criticize and segregate you for it. As if your choice must be approved by them. If they don’t approve they have some mandate to tell you that you are wrong and also can be rude for your choice of faith. If you don’t pray to what they pray to, then your ‘god’ is a demon or something. How archaic. LOL. I find that amazing. LOL again. How can you come to my space, face and life and tell me my religion is wrong? I didn’t hurt anyone with my faith and I don’t intend to. Whatever others of my same faith are or are not doing is not me. So don’t bundle me up into the same package. I am me and they are them. Besides, I am more than my religion. There are many aspects of who I am. So don’t just look at my spiritual choice and summarize me. You don’t know me. And you don’t have to know me. Also I owe nothing to you. I don’t need your approval for my spirituality. I would love to be your friend but let’s not let our spiritual choice ever get in the way. Be modern, be today and accept who I am as I don’t hurt anyone. 🙂 So look at all parts of who I am but the bottom line is my spirituality is my choice, do not ever presume to comment, disparage, judge or even think anything about it. I eat what I want. I dress as I like. Live where I want. Befriend who I wish. Write what I like on my social media space and pray to whatever I feel is working for me. Full stop! 🙂 Thanks for letting me live my life as your opinion of it is not needed, requested or solicited and I say this with deepest respects to you.. Humbly, Tsem Rinpoche
Comment I like and inspires me from Tsem Rinpoche.
For me, I have received teachings from H.H. the Dalai Lama and I still have to respect him as one of my lamas. It might be different for some of you who have not. But my approach must be respectful. Even if I didn’t have teachings from H.H. the Dalai Lama, would still approach him in a respectful manner. The advice against Dorje Shugden practice by His Holiness is hurting many people in fact millions. It’s creating discord, segregation and pain. Everything the Dalai Lama teaches is about compassion, tolerance and reconciliation and the Shugden practitioners deserve that too. I therefore, respectfully prostrating to the ground would ask H.H. the Dalai Lama to please send his ministers to talk to the leaders of the Shugden group and resolve this issue. I say all this with deepest respects. As a part Tibetan, I also wish His Holiness the best. Long live the Dalai lama.
Humbly, Tsem Rinpoche
Dear everyone, His Holiness Dalai Lama says to kick out monks from the monasteries who do not listen. I was so surprised at this short speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS6hq5HJNik
Reminds me of Lotus Sutra Chapter 4 on Expedient Means.
There was a story on how an old man had 2 sons. The older son loved dogs and the younger son was absolutely terrified of dogs. One day the family house caught fire and the old man had to get his sons out of the burning house. So to the older son, the old man told him there was a big dog OUTSIDE the house. To the younger son, the opd man told him there was a big dog INSIDE the house. As a results both sons ran out of the house as fast as they could.
Understanding this story, we can see that there is no point debating whether the big dog was inside or outside the house. 🙂
Good luck ! 🙂
Dorje Shugden followers in the millions will not abandon their practice. So it would be good if leaders of the Dorje Shugden practicing community met with the Tibetan leadership to work out something that will be a win-win situation for both sides. His Holiness Dalai Lama wants to meet the Chinese current leaders to resolve the Tibet issue. Why not meet the Shugden followers to resolve this issue too? Why forgive one ‘enemy’ and ignore another?~Tsem Rinpoche (Please read more here: https://www.tsemrinpoche.com/?p=57431)
We human have so many conflict in everything. Thank you Rinpoche for posting this article.
Conflicts not only occur choosing dharma teacher, dharma Center or so on. It’s also occur in office. I just wants to tell a story, past few days office mate starts blaming each others due to a minor issues. At first gesture I was very angry, intolerant with all impulsive words.
After reading this article, i feels very good as my mind reminds me that practicing dharma I should forgive, letting go, and respect other’s point of views.
After all as Rinpoche states that our actions create our karmas. If our actions change due to our minds it means our teacher’s teaching or view has changed our mind to look within and to change from within.
I truly bow to you Rinpoche! Not because of your teaching I will not have that second thoughts!!!
“True spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action”.
We embark on a spiritual journey because we are in search of something…something that nurtures and develops our spirit, which is the essence of who we are. Dharma is taught by Lord Buddha for us to be liberated from the sufferings of samsara. From Rinpoche’s sharing, it is clear that Rinpoche purely intends to practice the teachings bestowed upon him by his gurus. Cherishing every teaching by translating them into actions and kindness towards others.
As the Dharma is intended to alleviate our suffering, the affliction of the 8 worldly concerns into spiritual practice complete defeats the purpose of the Dharma. What is the point of judging the Guru by zooming in on their “faults? What is the motivation to make comparison between one guru and another? What is the intention of swaying students faith in their teachers who have taught them the Dharma that can be traced back to Lama Tsongkhapa and Lord Buddha? Why cause conflict, difficulty, trouble, pain and additional obstacles? Don’t we have enough of that already in our “normal” life?
I thank Rinpoche for reminding us to remain steadfast and focused on the teachings and not be pulled into politics and worldly concerns.
I have the right and freedom to marry who I want, same goes for which company I want to work for and where. I have the freedom to go to most countries on Earth. I have the right to eat in any restaurant I choose so long I pay for the food. I have the freedom who I want to mix with and the right to voice my opinions as long as there is no vulgarity and mud-slinging. And I have the freedom and choice of who, what and where I wish to follow for my spiritual and religious practice. After all, it boils down to me and for me.
In the deeper truth, Buddhism taught us non duality, there is no bad nor good; there is no right nor wrong; there should not be discrimination and definitely no discrimination of yours nor mine; your religion and mine which will lead to conflict and disharmony. When we are made to choose my way or your way then there is no way but war and no peace.
When we have found a guru who can show us the right path for our spiritual journey & develop faith in that teaching, we must stay on the path no matter what because there are 84000 ways that the buddha has taught to benefit the mind of different intelligence, culture & tradition. There is no one way is better than the other. Ultimately, the goal is to liberate us from our sufferings. Hence, like our belief & faith it is an individual or personal thing. What is important is that when practice spirituality, it is not about wanting to be right and others are wrong, we should have more tolerance, patient, kindness & care to bring peace & harmony to ourselves & others. The methods & teachings should make us a better person than before not worst. We should not criticize nor condemn other faith & practices, otherwise it would create confusion, disharmony, cause others to lost faith in their beliefs & above all, it contradicted the principles of spirituality.
Thank you Rinpoche for this teaching.
Conflicts are imprints we have in our minds which emerge every now and then when the conditions arise for them to be activated. Conflicts must come from anger, ignorance and attachments to our ideologies. We tend to rebel once our expectations are not met and we start to argue and try to prove our ideologies correct.
We should focus on curbing the conflict from arising in our minds. This way we will not create sufferings for those around us.
Hence, if we STOP arguing to prove that, your practice is better then another, that your Guru is better then my Guru and impose your Guru on me etc, there will be no conflict. We are not Enlightened, we do not have the Wisdom to the Truth. Once we find THE GURU for ourselves, stick to that Guru’s teachings and put them into practice. Do not criticize others as we know no better!
Je Tsongkhapa says clearly in his comment on the Guru devotion that if the teacher teaches something contrary to the Dharma, the Vinaya, one should not follow it. Therefore it is not really correct to insinuate that one MUST follow all the teachings of one’s guru. Tsongkhapa says also that if a teacher teaches something contrary to the great treatises it is better to abandon such a teaching and to follow the great treatises.
While I respect Rinpoche’s view I respectfully would like to express this point.
Dear Rinpoche thank you for sharing this teaching very true no matter what we criticize our teaching or others guru we still need to practice the more we criticize the longer we going to stay in samsara no way out the only way out is to practice create less negative karma for our self. What is important like what Rinpoche said is train our mind to be more kinder ,more tolerance and compassion to others.
Thank you for sharing Rinpoche. I have my full trust and respect for Rinpoche . Thank you with folded hands.
Dharma is individual. Rinpoche has impacted a great change in my life and i am following only one Guru and one centre practice all the way with faith and loyalty and also make sure that i will not be pulled into any conflict.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us the essence of spiritual practice. In this degenerate age, many uses religion to as a reason to put pressure on certain situations. One wonders what is the true motivation or intention of the those who started in following a Guru or Dharma practice?
It is indeed sad to see that for some who criticize other lineage, Guru or practice when it doesn’t conform to their beliefs, even to a point of rejecting the lineage itself to be real. These people dwells deeper in criticizing others rather than focusing on their spiritual practice to be tolerant, kind and compassion towards others.
Its true every Guru has different beliefs and practice, but it is the student responsibility to not only follow their Guru advice, but also not to engage criticizing other practice because it is different from them. Each Guru has their own unique teaching, practice and advice for the students, not matter how we really need to respect other lineages and the Guru still.
The most important thing if we find that the Guru teaching benefited us emotionally and physically, and through it transform our mind is the most important, we should follow wholeheartedly, and not involve in criticizing others, it degenerate Buddhism and also degenerate our practice which lead us no where, only to be seen as hypocrite.
Thanks Rinpoche for the blog post and also the simple yet deep Dharma attitude Rinpoche is showing.
Personally, when I was searching for spiritual practices, there are many of them. For me, all are good, all open up the positive side of us.
I remember very much the first time I attended Tsem Rinpoche’s teaching and Rinpoche talked about: “If you are a real Buddhist, you don’t criticize other religions or beliefs. Every spiritual practice leads to happiness and enlightenment, it’s just different method that suits different people, so we shouldn’t criticize. That’s the first thing a Buddhist should do.”
This makes so much sense and from then I decided to follow Rinpoche’s teachings wholeheartedly, and wanted to become a Buddhist from a freethinker.
This blog post still ring a bell to me, because by not criticizing, we concentrate more energy into the positive actions that we should do.
I respect H.H. Dalai Lama and H.H. Trijang Rinpoche very much too, because they are enlighten beings. Their teachings and works help millions of people in the world. Like what Rinpoche says in the post, when a being is enlighten, the enlighten level is the same, no big name or popularity will define who has higher level.
I hold on to this view, and I find myself a good stand in whatever conflicts. This is Dharma that helps me not to be confused by the conflicts.
Thanks Rinpoche and I hope more people can practice this view and strengthen their spiritual practice.
Thank you Rinpoche for you kind and profound sharing on guru devotion. We will always keep you kind advice on staying focus and yet impartial by comments by others when it comes to defining the true path by different highly attain masters on Dharma practice.
As it is,I am far from able to comment on different guru opinion on the ultimate form of practice when it comes to dharma knowledge. All I could do is focus on our Guru advice as I am comfortable with through the years which I felt is beneficial to my dharma understanding .Which in turn help me towards developing a positive mind transformation through his compassion and generosity in imparting the rare dharma practice to laymen like most of us .
We trust that our Guru Lineage is pure and we have no doubt in its authenticity..
This is the Greatest article ever. It’s so practical and is so profound. Practise compassionate, be wise and Equanimity for ALL. Be Peace and bring Peace. That’s the real Human Right. Just love it!
Dear Rinpoche,
i always had this conflicting notion of mine. and i thought of asking you humbly, but luckily it is is already there. thank you so much for such a great teaching. _/\_
What about a teacher who points at me and tells his Chinese disciples,” Look, we are Chinese. That guy is an Indian. Forget about him?” I left him and have decided to practice on my own.Did I take a wrong step?
From the first time I came across Rinpoche’s teachings till today, I have always respected Rinpoche for his consistency.
That to me is the mark of success of an individual. Having lived through all sorts of different situations, Rinpoche has shown to us by example that it is possible to live a life of consistency.
It shows how much Rinpoche values his Gurus and the teachings passed to him which is immensely respectable.
I have personally failed many times in this aspect but it is people like Rinpoche who inspires me to do better each time I fail. It is examples set by Rinpoche that constantly teaches me to improve myself in all aspects.
For this, I thank you Rinpoche.
Thank you, Rinpoche for sharing this Teachings. As a true dharma practitioner, we should respect all lineages and faith and should not criticized or put down others faith. Spiritual practice is not about what is right or what is wrong or whose lineage is better. Spirituality is all about tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action.Even though we may not agree with others faith, we should not discriminate. Every individual has the right to their own faith and religion and it is not for us to judge or condemn.
Thank you so much for your fascinating insight dear Tsem Rinpoche. As per usual. I was not aware of any schism between these two Lamas, but very good teaching on devotion, respect, and dealing with opposing views.
Thank you Rinpoche for making us see that all enlightened beings are equal in compassion, wisdom and power. One highly attained being cannot be better than another one. It’s just how they manifest. Highly attained beings all should be (equally) respected. Therefore we can respect and have faith in both Trijang Rinpoche and H.H. the Dalai Lama.
However, some attained masters do manifest ‘conflict’ for a higher purpose. Being compassionate, they skilfully manifest a means to bring ultimate happiness to all beings. Hence we should not be pulled into a conflict.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your advice, thoughts, explanation and personal experience to us so that we can learn how to respect the different views or teachings from many great Masters. I am truly humble and fortunate to have learn from the Guru Devotion examples as practiced and shown by Rinpoche towards all the Gurus from the past. May all the great Masters and Gurus continue to spread the Dharma to their students according to their own lineages and traditions without conflicts, live in peace and harmony with all Dharma brothers and sisters.
Thank you Rinpoche for reminding us what is the correct way and attitude we should have as a Buddhist. The Principle and the art of Buddhism is to generate compassion, to love, care, accept and at the end liberate all sentient beings, which do not come with condition. That’s the ultimate Bodhisatva path that we all wanted to achieve. If we cannot accept each other because we have different Buddhism practice given by different guru, something so simple as that and we cannot tolerant, need not talk about to love each all sentient being.
The world already bearing enough of hatred, sadness and sufferings everyday. Why are we creating more conflict to hurt and torture each other because of political issue. People dying everyday due to hunger Kids do not go to school due to poverty. People sick and dying due to disasters. What is the point of studying the Dharma from a Guru but at the end you abandon everything that the Guru gave you.
I will follow my Guru’s way because I see compassion, wisdom and peace in my guru’s teachings, actions and speech. That’s the reason of me following a Guru which is to learn to be have compassion for all sentient beings, to create peace and harmony with the wisdom that I learn from my Guru with each other and at the end to achieve Buddhahood. That’s all I need to care..
Put your hand on your left chest, take a little moment to feel your heart, silently, you may hear your inner voice, have full faith to whatever the Guru gives us.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with all of us the correct attitude that we should have when we practice Buddhism, and also explaining to all of us here what the true meaning of being a Buddhist mean.
I remember Rinpoche would always emphasize to us the importance in respecting all other religions and also all beings, telling us that when we do something disrespectful, we may be hurting people around us that does have deep respect for the people that we are criticizing.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us how we should go about when we are in situations that we are in a dilemma on what we should listen and what we should follow. I believe many of us do face this problem, and others would criticize us when we chose something that opposes what they think that we should follow. This article really helped me understand and think through some of the questions that I previously had in mind.

Thank you Rinpoche for sharing your thoughts on the right attitude and mindfulness we should have when dealing with differences in opinions especially one that is sensitive and personal, our spiritual practice.
I believe in reality there is no conflict between the enlightened ones but more of a huge test of our own attitude to whatever is presented to us. If we follow the Buddha’s teachings, then there can never be any conflict or criticism. I also believe in this saying that Rinpoche shared “Sometimes enlightened beings can manifest ‘conflict’ for a higher purpose” and for us who are still deluded should be so quick to lash out our naive judgements and jump in the band wagon of those who criticise other’s. The moment we criticise another person’s spiritual teacher, teachings, faith… we are no longer spiritual ourselves. How can compassion be selective when we say prayers for all sentient beings?
I’m glad and fortunate to have only one Guru – Tsem Rinpoche and not be in such a situation where I have to choose this or that Guru. But for those who have more than one and have to face such consequences, I hope this sharing from Rinpoche will bring them some kind of relief and peace. After all the truth is… “True spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action.” as mentioned by Rinpoche.
Some follow His Holiness the Dalai Lama, some follow His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche. I follow both of these great masters because my Rinpoche follows and have great respect to both of them.
And yes, learning Dharma is not for us to be righteous about my Guru/practice is better than yours, Dharma is not for us to say who is wrong and who is right. True Dharma practice is TOLERANCE, COMPASSION & WISDOM.
Like what Tsem Rinpoche written above, highly attained beings can manifest ‘conflict’ for a higher purpose. To me, this higher purpose is for all the practitioners to put the Buddha’s teachings into REAL action. When there’s ‘conflict’ between these highly attained beings, as the students, we this is the time we practice compassion and not arrogant. REMEMBER, when we criticize or put down other Guru/practice, we are practicing arrogant/righteousness, NOT COMPASSION/TOLERANCE.
Thus there’s no point to debate whose practice is the best and most correct as we all are religious/spiritual people. Moreover His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his Holiness Trijang Rinpoche are equally good, who are we to simply put down any of them? The world doesn’t need the BEST RELIGION, BUT MUTUAL RESPECT & TOLERENCE ARE NEEDED…(so badly)
My husband and I practise 2 very different doctrine of Buddhism, him being a Theravadan and me a Vajrayana. We share a lot in what we learn through Buddhism and the practice is actually quite different but the essence of Buddhism never changes from the initial beginning with Shakyamuni Buddha. This is what make Buddhism so very empowering, as mentioned by Rinpoche the result is to make us a better person who will live with inner peace of tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion.
As correctly mentioned by Rinpoche it is at our different levels of spiritual development that we can understand and practise not that any teachings is right or wrong. Accept the teachings most suitable and practise and then we will realise that we have gained merits to go further.
I have the good fortune to have one teacher and in whom I trust completely and in following Tsem Rinpoche’s teaching, I respect and do not find fault with any other teacher as we do not have the wisdom to judge but only have the merit to follow and learn.
I respect and honour all the great beings who live their lives to benefit others by teaching the Dharma and will not judge nor decide at my low level which is right or wrong.
Most of all I an grateful I found my Guru, HE Tsem Rinpoche, most perfect teacher for me and if Rinpoche respect both Trijiang Rinpoche and the Dalai Lama, so will I.
Thank you Rinpoche for the teachings and guiding me to the correct attitude towards my spiritual path. I am very inspired by Rinpoche for His strong samara with his Guru. I believe in Rinpoche and will follow Rinpoche all the way but still respect others brief. True spirituality is about compassion, tolerance and kindness.
Thank you Rinpoche for the teachings.
All highly attained Lamas and high incarnation of beings should be greatly respected and we should have absolute faith in them. We as ordinary practioners should not make distinctions or distorted views on them, as all of them are well above our meagre level of spiritual understanding and judgements. Each highly attained Lama has his own way to guide his students to attainment, 84,000 ways of teachings as said by Buddha Shakyamuni. We have our Guru, lineage, teaching and our practice to adhere to and to remain loyal in them. Like our Rinpoche has always advised, be firm in your practice, teaching and your guru’s guidance on how to become a better person and have respect for all beings. Just concentrate on your practice to gain wisdom, compassion, tolerance and to try to bring peace to wherever we go and do not create conflict. By so doing, we will be able to find peace to reach our desired destination for the benefit of all beings. Om mani Padme Hung.
A good reminder to everyone to NOT make judgement and take sides when it comes to religious practices. Religion should be a private affair between man and his practice (be it Buddha, dharma, God, etc). Openly criticizing and get offended by another practice is a demonstration of poor behavior, leave alone criticizing own lineage and Guru. When we witness such situation, as good practitioner, the least we could do is not to take side.
We should just do our practice, gain compassion, gain wisdom, gain tolerance. Bring peace to everyone and everywhere we go and don’t create conflict.
Thank You Rinpoche for the blog post.
Thank you very much Rinpoche for sharing the RIGHT attitude to have in order to gain more in our Dharma. This compassionate view clearly shows your compassionate nature and how we should always think and behave when such situations occur. It’s also a good reminder that we should always have a clear mind when being criticized and, at times, being ridiculed by others.
With folded hands,
Lum Kok Luen
Dear Rinpoche,
Thank you for this wonderful article with multiple teachings in it.
Rinpoche always before accepting students and intitiates will often tell us to examine if Rinpoche is truly suitable for us. Rinpoche will make sure we are ready and comfortable before allowing us to study with Rinpoche.
Rinpoche practices true compassion and always reminds us to be compassionate, patient, loving and respectful to all beings, especially animals who cannot speak and fend for themselves.
In all Dharma talks I attended by Rinpoche, if there was ever a talk on religion, Rinpoche NEVER belittle other religions and is full of respect for those religions and the people who practice them. It is with Rinpoche’s actions and speech that taught me to be respectful for others and other religion, no matter how different we are. By this same note, within Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche also teaches me to be mindful of other great lamas, even though their teachings or their practices are different. I choose my own Guru, so I respect my Guru. My Guru has given me a pure lineage practice that came all the way from the great Lord Tsongkapa and I will practice them dutifully.
There is no conflict if we don’t create those conflicts, and I will humbly follow my Guru’s advice to have harmony with all.
Thank you Rinpoche.
Thank you Rinpoche for sharing with us the correct attitude we should have as a spiritual practitioner. I see that many people are too carried away with judging who’s right and wrong that they lose out on the essence of spirituality. As Rinpoche wrote, “True spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action.”
It makes so much sense. Spiritual practice should make us a better person. When we judge, thinking that we know better, it only shows our arrogance and how big our ego is. When we continue to do this, we are only enforcing and perpetuating our self cherishing mind which is the cause for us to be stuck in Samsara.
世尊传法8万4千种;84大成就者“不入主流”的修行;
With folded hands, I thank Rinpoche for yet another precious post. These words struck out the most to me – “True spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action.” These are the very things that I see in Rinpoche and what I aspire to have. I will strive to continue to respect all other’s believes, even if I do not agree or understand them.
Thanks Rinpoche for sharing this. From this I understand as long as the teacher teaches us to transform our mind to be a better one for others then he/she should be the good one to follow. That is no better or worse teacher, it is only the matter of their teaching might be different. And we should not listen to the criticism from others about our own teacher as they judge by their own view and most of the time people’s own view is very prejudice, so just follow without doubting..
Well-said Dense Kuek. I agreed with you, as long as we have checked carefully and have faith in our Guru, we should not be influenced by others’ criticism because that is their own views. Our Guru is for our own spiritual progress and our mind transformation. Hence, have faith in our own Guru and follow his/ her instructions all the way.
In practicing the dharma path, we should focus on the learning and study of the Buddhist doctrine and should not be involved in any kind of conflict, nor should be judge or take sides. In Vajrayana, we are taught and trained to have good samaya and develop guru devotion with our Gurus, to trust them in what they teach to enable us to attain results all the way from our Guru to the lineage masters. It doesn’t make sense to me that our Guru will harm us or teach us to take sides. We should always follow our Guru’s teachings and instructions and not be swayed to being judgemental or who is wrong and who is right.
Dear Rinpoche thank you for this teaching which is timely and many conflicts arises not just across religions but intra-religion too. In such times with so many high lamas and monks/nuns together with respected lay followers who have expounded the dharma for the sake of sentiments beings, who are we who are yet ignorant, far from enlightenment to even criticise or say anything negative about their methods and teachings . Though we may disagree with another guru or lama teaching or method the best thing to do is just walk away and find another monk or lama practices to follow which they find agreeable. That would definitely be better than opening our mouths and creating more negative karma. To whichever supposedly high lama or monk who openly engage in conflicts and badmouths other monks or their methods , Shame on you for the Buddha Sakyamuni taught 84000 methods , who dares say method no 79000 is far more superior than method no 79001, when so many paths can lead to enlightment. The very key principle of tolerance is lost once we badmouth anyone. Did not the Buddha say ehi passiko – come and see. Buddhism is never about blind faith but to practice and witness and experience the fruits of practice directly.
Is it any wonder that those who criticise are truly ignorant. The mind that is still untamed is susceptible to illusory effects of daily phenomena. If one has examined and accepted ones teacher, one has to go all the way with that teacher and develop ones mind based on the teachings imparted. Is it not true that if ones mind is steadfast in the teachings of the sage Shakyamuni that ones teacher imparts even if the teacher turns out to be a false one, one can still be liberated based on ones devotion. Before one gains attainment, it is so dangerous to judge who or what is right because the mind in its infant stage cannot decipher the TRUTH. And a mind that is full of ‘desires and passions” for samsaric pursuits is a dangerous mind. I thank HE Tsem Tulku Rinpoche for sharing this with us. We need to rise above everything else safe for spirituality and truly practice and develop COMPASSION as armed with compassion NOTHING and truly NOTHING can harm us. This I quote with authority from my own Guru.
There are so many dharma that we can learn from this article. Thank you Rinpoche for the teaching. We need to respect all beings and other practices as spirituality is tolerance, forgiveness, kindness and compassion in action. I will respect all beings, all lineages and follow the lineage of my Guru as shown by Rinpoche.
